What to do in Madrid? Admire one of the most livable cities in the world
Are you passing through the Spanish capital and wondering what to do in Madrid? Do you have little time to visit the city or have you decided to stay a few more days? In this section you will find some itineraries from one to several days to admire one of the most liveable cities in the world, a metropolis full of charm and entertainment.
Although Madrid is a city of over three million inhabitants, the ease with which you will move through its streets and neighborhoods will seem incredible. You will get – at least that’s how it is for me – the idea of a very livable city.
Certainly the extensive and functional underground network helps to suggest this idea, but you will find that part of the center is easily accessible on foot. So, if you are in Madrid and you only have a few hours of time, do not be discouraged: you will still be able to see a part of the city! The one-day itinerary you find in this section can also be done on foot and in a relatively short time, or extended according to your needs.
Our advice is therefore to keep the one-day itinerary as a basis and modify it according to your tastes, dedicating more time to what you like best.
Beyond the “classic” routes – from Puerta del Sol to Plaza de Oriente, from Gran Via to Plaza Mayor, from Retiro Park to Madrid de los Austrias – we recommend you to get lost in the downtown districts. In fact, Madrid is not only monumental squares, museums, large arteries crowded with people, but is made up of neighborhood life, of narrow streets populated with tapas bars and terrazas crowded with people. Get lost in the streets of Huertas, La Latina, Malasaña, Lavapiés, mingle with “madrileños” and enjoy life as they seem to know how to do, you will immediately feel at home!
